Myomectomy treatment in Hyderabad

Dr. Chandana Lakkireddi, at Nova IVF Fertility Centre, Hyderabad, is an expert in removing uterine fibroids using the advanced Myomectomy process.

Myomectomy is a surgical process of removing uterine fibroids. Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growth of the uterus and are not associated with developing into cancer. The fibroids generally occur during the childbearing days or can be developed at any age in females. The uterine fibroids can cause symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, back pain, abdominal pain, frequent urination, and pain during sexual intercourse.

Myomectomy is most suitable for females who want to have a baby in the future because this process only removes fibroids and leaves the uterus in place and can have a normal functioning uterus. Another process is hysterectomy, in which complete removal of the uterus to correct fibroid condition.

Benefits of myomectomy treatment over hysterectomy

The doctor advises myomectomy surgery if the fibroids become problematic. The reason to opt for myomectomy over hysterectomy are stated below-

Myomectomy does not involve the complete removal of the uterus, and it is best for the women who plan for future pregnancy.
Only fibroids are removed if they cause any difficulty in pregnancy.
It restores the functionality of the uterus and only removes fibroids.

Types of myomectomy

The myomectomy can be performed with the following approaches-

Abdominal myomectomy-

It is also popularly known as ‘open myomectomy.’
In this surgical procedure, the fibroids are removed from the uterus wall through an open surgical cut in the lower belly called ‘bikini cut.’

Anesthesia is provided before the surgery so that the patient falls asleep during the whole procedure.

It is performed when the fibroids are large, numerous, and embedded deep into the uterus.

Then, after the fibroid removal, the uterine muscles are sewn back together using several layers of stitches. The scar may be hidden in the pubic hair or bikini line.

Every surgical procedure is associated with some risks, but an abdominal myomectomy may cause minimal to no risks if performed by an expert. About 2-5 % of women can have an infection that can be treated with antibiotics.

Laparoscopic Myomectomy-

It is performed for the removal of certain fibroids and when the fibroids are seen to be large.

Anesthesia is provided before the surgery so that the patient falls asleep during the whole procedure.

Four incisions are made in the lower belly: one in the belly, one near the bikini line, and one near each hip.

In the next step, the abdominal cavity is inflated with carbon dioxide gas. A thin microscope called a laparoscope is placed through one of the incisions and a large instrument through other incisions to remove fibroids.

The uterine muscles are sewn back, and the gas is released. After that, the skin incisions are closed.

The risk is rare with this surgery but can include injury to internal organs. The uterus can also become weaker after the surgery, so the doctor recommends abdominal myomectomy over laparoscopy if one plans for future pregnancy.

Hysteroscopic Myomectomy-

It only removes the submucosal fibroids and is unable to remove the fibroids located within the uterine walls.

In this procedure, a speculum is placed into the v-agina, and then a thin telescope is inserted through the cervix into the uterine cavity. Then, the instrument passed through the hysteroscope is used to remove submucosal fibroids.

This procedure does not leave any scars.
