2) Ovarian stimulation - Normally, a woman produces a single egg per month, but to produce multiple eggs fertility drugs are prescribed. The fertility drugs contain follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) that makes ovaries produce multiple eggs. These are given for about a week or ten days before treatment. During the ovarian stimulation, the doctor will monitor the growth and development of follicles. The final maturity of the follicles is achieved with Human Chorionic Gonadotropin(hCG). It is given when four or more follicles are grown to 18-20 mm in size.
3) Egg retrieval - The egg retrieval is performed after 30-34 hours of hCG shot. During this procedure, the doctor puts the patient under anesthesia to make the procedure comfortable. Then, the doctor used an ultrasound to guide a needle into an ovary through vagina. The needle is attached to the suction device that helps remove ovaries. This process of collecting eggs is known as ‘follicular aspiration’. The frozen and donated eggs may also be used for the process of IVF.
4) Insemination and fertilization using ICSI - The mixing of sperm and ovum is known as Insemination. The retrieved egg and many sperm are mixed in a petri dish and placed in an environmentally controlled chamber. After a few hours, the sperm may enter into the egg.
But this process is nowadays being replaced by ICSI if the sperm count is low.
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a procedure in which the sperm selected is directly injected into the egg with the aid of a tiny needle, called a micropipette. This technique improves the chances of pregnancy. It is done when the sperm count is low or they have structural deformities.
The cultured dishes are then incubated in a special condition and after 12-24 hours, they are inspected for the signs of fertilization. The fertilized eggs then divide and form an embryo.
5) Embryo transfer - The developing embryo is then implanted into the uterus. It is generally performed after 3-5 days of fertilization. It involves the insertion of a thin tube called a catheter through the vagina into the uterus and then releases the embryo into the uterus. If the embryo is attached to the lining of the uterus then the pregnancy is successful.
